Dynamics of changes in the synaptic content of the mediator on the example of an isolated glycinergic synapse model

The glycinergic synapse is one of the main structural units that provide inhibition in the neurons of the mammalian central nervous system. Despite the fact that this neurotransmitter is inferior in amplitude and severity of the inhibitory effect to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), it is glycine that fine-tunes the plastic regulation of neurons in conditions of physiological changes in the state of the excitable membrane during the passage of nerve impulses.

Using the previously proposed isolated synapse model in COMSOL Multiphysics, a spatiotemporal distribution of the neurotransmitter concentration in the synaptic cleft was obtained at various moments after ejection from the vesicles from the presynaptic membrane.

It was shown that the geometric parameters of the ejection localization, along with the localization of receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, influence the process of pulse transmission in the glycinergic synapse.
